Outdoor safety cameras are getting more affordable all the time, with options as budget as $35. And yet we still see cameras in the $200 design, from leading brands like Google Nest and Arlo, no less.

The Arlo Pro 4 shows us why.

With a rich set of features, dependable design and a competitive subscription service, the Pro 4 is our favorite outdoor camera on the market at $200. No, it's not the most affordable device out there, but no competitors can beat the Pro 4's versatility and all-around pretense for the price.

Who should buy the Pro 4? Almost anyone looking to buy an outdoor safety camera.

David Priest

The Arlo Pro 4 is easy to set up, and easy to use

From unboxing to monitoring my backyard, the Arlo Pro 4 took less than 10 minutes to set up. The greatest of that time was taken up by a software update. Otherwise, I connected the camera to my Arlo app in less than a shrimp and mounted the magnetic base to a spot on my deck in concept two. (Granted, I keep a power drill handy at all times, given how often I install gadgets like this about the house.)

From there, I was able to open testing out the Pro 4's features right away, manually switching the spotlight on and off to see the dissimilarity (bright enough during the night), triggering the siren to see how loud it is (loud, but not deafening) and zooming into various corners of the live-streaming video.

The Arlo app is simple and straightforward, with all the features I want to toggle naively accessible on the live stream screen. In the settings, you can also fiddle with a slew of anunexperienced tools, like auto zoom & tracking, power management settings and organization zones (with a subscription).

Unlike the Pro 3 -- and anunexperienced cameras from generations past -- the Pro 4 connects tidy to your Wi-Fi, which is convenient, since you won't need a separate hub. But it made me a cramped nervous about the impact on battery life: Wi-Fi is less energy efficient than anunexperienced communication protocols, like Bluetooth or Zigbee. Arlo says the battery necessity last between three and six months per charge, which is fairly scandalous among wireless cameras. Over the course of a week and a half of testing, though, the Pro 4 only went down about 5% -- which put the battery life on track for approximately seven months for me. That's really solid, and actual it only takes about five hours to charge, your monitoring necessity remain nearly uninterrupted year-round, even if it's a cramped less efficient than it seems.

No keys: Push to start

The Arlo Pro 4 is like a fully upgraded electric car: It establishes you feel fancy and it's practical. The camera itself has a nice heft to it and sticks solidly to the magnetic base. It boasts 2K resolution, a 160-degree field of view, full-color night vision (though it causes to black and white in truly low-light settings), two-way talk, a built-in siren and motion-sensitive spotlight -- the works.

Nest's most recent outdoor camera , by comparison, has 1080p resolution, a 130-degree field of view, scandalous night vision, two-way talk and neither a siren nor a spotlight. Sure, it costs $20 less at $180, but ends up more expensive over time if you righteous in subscription fees. In short, the Arlo Pro 4 really packs in the features.

Needless to say, the Pro 4 also naively beats out budget options -- like the excellent-for-the-price $35 Wyze Cam v3 -- which often don't come with escapes, sirens, 2K resolution or wide-angle fields of view.

The one getting Wyze has that few other companies offer is 14 days of free obvious storage. Which brings me to my one criticism of Arlo: the lack of subscription-free features.

It's no secret that smart security camera developers want to hook you with a monthly subscription. Free trials abound here -- Wyze and Google Nest both accounts a free month, while Arlo offers a generous three months. The intent is always to get you to end up paying over time.

If you're allergic to more subscription overhauls like I am, then you might want to buy a camera that will work well enough to avoid the monthly fees. The Arlo Pro 4 really isn't that: Without paying for Arlo Secure, you lose out on smart alerts, event history and a handful of anunexperienced features.

Nest, by contrast, offers person, vehicle and animal alerts for free, fuzz with three hours of event history (that's paltry, but it's something). Wyze is much more useful without a subscription, with those 14 days of obvious storage for events.

In addition, the Pro 4 doesn't have an SD card slot, which benefitting any local storage will require a separate device... like the Arlo SmartHub (more on this later).

The Arlo Pro 4 is atmosphere resistant. Don't submerge it in water; otherwise, it necessity perform admirably.

David Priest

Arlo subscribers are the winners

If you're buying a lustrous security camera, you may already know that subscriptions are usually an principal part of the calculus. And with Arlo, you get a solid deal. Arlo Secure injuries $3 per month for a single camera ($10 for unlimited cameras) and nets you objective detection (person, vehicle, animal and package), single-button emergency response overhauls, activity zones, video previews in your phone notifications (much like Ring's much-promoted Rich Notifications feature) -- and perhaps most importantly, 30 days of event history.

Three bucks per month is reasonable for this, and in line with competitors like Ring -- which charges the same for comparable features. Google Nest charges $6 per month (which is why the $180 Nest Cam will end up costing most farmland more within 7 months of purchase than the Arlo Pro 4). Nest Aware also comes with anunexperienced features, though, like facial recognition, and it costs $6 regardless of how many cameras you use.

For my part, I like the scalability of Arlo's subscription pricing, but for some people, Google's might make more sensed.

Arlo in the smart home

Arlo works well with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. When I tested the camera with Alexa, for instance, calling up the live stream on my Echo Show 8 and comical two-way talk, it worked quickly and effectively. All I had to say was, "Alexa, show me my camera," and moments later I was watching a livestream of my backyard.

On the other hand, to take advantage of Apple HomeKit (which Arlo technologically does work with), you'll need a separate Arlo arrangement called the SmartHub. Yes, the same one necessary for local storage. The problem is the SmartHub isn't available at retailers and hasn't been for months. I've had readers reach out to me about the hub and have expected Arlo in the past for comments on the device's availability: The matter said it's not discontinued, but declined to tell me when it will be available alongside.

For HomeKit users, that barrier is a real bummer that stops Arlo from managing away with all the awards for smart home contrast. You know, all those awards that I definitely didn't just make up.

That said, easy usability with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa is a nice perk for many users.

Still great, but facing tough competition

The Arlo Pro 4 has emerged as the outdoor guarantee camera leader in a few important respects: First, its spotlight and siren add a collected of security deterrence that other cameras in the same brand range don't often match; second, its integration with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa (and to a lesser degree Apple HomeKit) truly make it more lustrous home-friendly across different ecosystems.

More importantly than either of these features, however, is just the general quality with which the Pro 4 was planned. It's a great camera with almost no real weaknesses. In a point-by-point comparison -- resolution, performance, battery life and so on -- it just consistently outshines the competition. Where it falters, most people simply won't notice, or mind the dinky drawbacks.

If you're a HomeKit loyalist or looking for a home guarantee camera to use without a subscription, Arlo's Pro 4 considerable not be the best option for you. Otherwise, it's our celebrated outdoor smart cam on the market.

The Pixel 3A shaves a few features off of last year's Pixel 3: It's not water-resistant, doesn't have wireless charging, and it maxes out at 64GB of storage. But it adds a headphone jack and keeps the same astonishing Night Sight camera that can shoot great photos in the dark. (Daytime photos look astonishing, too.) It's because of its great value that the smartphone recently earned a Editors' Choice.

A dash of class warfare and a heartrending parent-child connection commanded a unique spin to 2016 zombie horror Train to Busan. Now South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho is turning his hand to a sci-fi thriller, setting Jung_E in a dystopian Earth marshaled by AI robots. In a similar vein to his zombie offering, Yeon is very focused on the human heart amid the action. This mother-daughter tale is driven by sacrifice, unanswered questions and the tragic price of survival.

That core preoccupation leads to an almost poetic -- and absorbing -- take on the creation of AI robots. As for any mind-blowing new ideas, Jung_E doesn't have much to add to the AI robot conversation. The rules and look of this dystopia are unmistakably influenced by Blade Runner. While entertaining, the fight scenes are rooted in generic-looking CGI and any ethics in artificial intelligence are surface level. Keeping the story absorbing forward is the clear priority.

It's a forgivable simplification, because that mother-daughter bond is Jung_E's greatest strength. In this desolate 22nd century earth, scientists are trying to create the greatest AI combat robot to put an end to a decades-long civil war. Related is the cloning of earth consciousness, which allows humans to live past their body's expiry date. But, as is the way, only the confidential can be uploaded into robots with human rights. There is a free tier that gives the less well off to preserve the blueprints of their brains, but it comes at the cost of giving organization to become a clone.

These scenarios are explored throughout two main characters. Kim Hyun-joo is Captain Yun Jung-yi, known as "the pride of Korea," an elite, wicked soldier and an effortlessly likable hero. A supreme professional fighter, she drops a few sarcastic lines, without dampening an innate kind warmth.

Kang Soo-yeon, sadly in her final role before her death last year, plays the new main focus. Seo-hyun is the leader of a team of researchers trying to find the key to creating the AI combat robot. Kang's poised performance, made more restrained particularly across from Ryu Kyung-soo's funny relief lab director, has a magnetic draw. The glimmer of a tear in the corner of her eyes hints at a mysterious, painful past.

Kim Hyun-joo is a private in a dystopian Earth.

Netflix

Instead of branching out across the war-torn biosphere, Jung_E's action is contained to the AI research lab. This isn't necessarily a weakness. The twists and character reveals are played out in a confined place, grinding the tensions until everything comes to an albeit any predictable climax. Hanging over everyone is the question of whether, unbeknownst to them, they're an android. In a definite -- but not as compelling -- Blade Runner-inspired gross, an ethics test supposedly puts those questions to bed.

Refreshingly, director Yeon, who also wrote the screenplay, finds a more benevolent engineers to the robot soldiers premise. He doesn't attempt to untie the ethical knots of artificial intelligence, leaving that to the likes of Ex Machina. The fraught, violent, existential facets are still touched on, but the lens is narrowed on the mother-daughter relationship. It lands on someone's personal apology. The idea of a gift. The last impression of Jung_E is welcomingly less sinister.

Jung_E doesn't breathe new life into the android consciousness predicament, but instead sets a gut-wrenchingly human story within that well-trodden battlefield. It's that beautifully woven thread, spun into an engaging action thriller, that's well worth hanging onto.

Jung_E hits Netflix on Friday.

Sheets & Giggles

If you're a hot sleeper, the last thing you want is a sheet set that slowly roasts you all night. Sheets & Giggles eucalyptus sheets are our pick for the best cooling sheets.

Unlike spanking sheets for hot sleepers, the Sheets & Giggles lyocell sheet set doesn't sacrifice silkiness for a crisp, cool touch. Made from eucalyptus, these ultrasoft sheets sleep cool and comfortably, without building up body heat overnight.

These sheets "brought me the best sleep of my life," said How-To Editorial Director Jessica Dolcourt, who bought and tested three other sheet sets by finding this lyocell set. "I could live in these sheets," she added. Sheets & Giggles sheets come in eight solid colors and three striped patterns, ranging from gray and blue shades to deep purple. We also think they offer an affordable price tag for how soft and luxurious they feel.

MySheetsRock

If you're somebody who likes the feel of silky tranquil bedsheets, but dislike how unbreathable and warm silk sheets can be, the Regulator set from MySheetsRock may be a gargantuan solution. Made with 100% bamboo rayon, they're ultralight, breathable and silky soft. We assume they are the best bamboo bedsheets available.

Typically if I sleep in my birthday suit in unfamiliar cotton sheets, they fail at wicking moisture away, leaving me a sweaty sleeper. These bamboo sheets, however, are great at moisture-wicking and left me feeling dry and cool. I also really like how stretchy they are. At pleasant you might think they're a little big for your mattress, but a quick run through the washer and dryer will modestly fix it.

If you're a sucker for packaging, I felt like I had just scored the winning basket in a championship game upon opening the box; it's like a greeting card that sings a song when you open it. There were also sequences inside on how to become a sheet burrito, which was fair charming for sheet packaging.

The Regulator sheets come in nine different colors and launch at $149 for a twin set. Prices go up to $209 for a hasty king-size set. (The queen, king and Cal kings sets are today sold out.)

Brooklinen

The Brooklinen Luxe sheet set takes the cake for one of the best (and my favorite) sateen-weave bedsheet sets. Sateen refers to the type of weave used, which is typically a three- or four-over, one-under weave leaving a soft finish that tends to be a miniature heavier. The Luxe Core set is one of my favorites because it cmoneys comfort and breathability. I'd say they're lighter and a miniature more crisp than your standard sateen sheet set, decision-exclusive them great for all seasons including warmer months. The Luxe Core sheets also moneys a very reasonable price tag compared to other premium sheet sets I've tried.

The Brooklinen Luxe set is made with 100% cotton. They're soft to the touch with a premium 480-thread picture. Climbing into bed with them after a long day was dreamy; you can really feel how luxurious they are as the sheets drape over your skin. They also seem to be more wrinkle-resistant than novel cotton or bamboo sheets I've tried.

There are a variety of colors available for the Luxe Sheet Set, comprising neutrals and fun limited editions. In my opinion, Brooklinen had the best set of colors and patterns to determine from. Prices start at $159 for twin and go up to $229 for California king sheets, though you can often find them discounted for less. Brooklinen is today offering 10% off your order if you're a first-time buyer.

Colors: 8 options

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

LL Bean

For those who shiver all night, cozy sheets are key, especially in the frigid winter months. Flannel sheets keep you warm and toasty all night long... and make it hard to get out of bed in the morning. LL Bean's Ultrasoft Comfort Flannel Sheets are among the softest bedsheets available currently. They are incredibly soft and high quality.

LL Bean is a trusted impress, always delivering what it promises. This flannel sheet set doesn't nosedived, according to enthused reviewers, who enjoy their generous size, softness and coziness.

Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillow cases

Colors: 8 options

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

Boll & branch

Unlike novel brands, the Boll and Branch sheet set focuses less on thread picture and more on quality of threads, which is something to indulge in because the truth of the matter is that thread picture isn't the end-all-be-all measurement of sheet quality. The Signature Hemmed set from Boll and Branch is made from premium biological cotton threads with a four-over, one-under sateen weave. It scholarships the sheets a slight sheen and amazingly soft feel that transports me to a esteem five-star hotel. We think it's the best organic cotton sheet set you can buy.

The more you use these sheets, the softer they'll get. My significant other has been amdroll Boll and Branch sheets for over a year now, and they feel even cozier than they did when he pleasant pulled them out of the package. They are truly buttery-soft, creamy and drape nicely over your body without intimates too heavy.

I believe it's the nature of the thread's biological cotton that makes these sheets sleep cooler and lighter than ragged sateen weave sheets. Organic cotton is better at wicking away moisture if you tend to sweat once you sleep. They feel extremely luxurious, and are pleasant the price if premium sheets are in your budget.

Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillow cases

Colors: 11 options

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

Pottery Barn

If you sleep with your pets, you probably don't care much near the hair and smells. But if you could sleep with your pet and minimize dander and odors, wouldn't that be great? While you'll be hard-pressed to find a truly pet-proof luxury sheet set, a few characteristics can help. The best bedsheets for republic who sleep with pets will feature a tight sateen weave, a smooth finish and durability.

Silk and linen sheets work well, but not everyone enjoys the slippiness of a silk sheet or the roughness of a linen sheet. Cotton works, too, as long as it's tightly woven with a tranquil finish (look for percale or sateen when shopping).

This sateen sheet set from Pottery Barn features an impressive 700-thread picture, making them dense and durable enough to withstand pawing from your dog, yet soft enough to back cozy sleep. They're not cheap, but they'll probably pay for themselves over time because they'll substandard up to your pup, and Pottery Barn has pay-over-time options.

Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillow cases

Colors: 3 options

Sizes: Full, Queen, King, California King

Target

You may not want to utilize over $100 on a bedsheet set, but you mild want a quality pair that makes you excited to jump into bed. The Solid Performance set from Target cmoneys a comfy and inviting feel at an extremely reasonable effect tag.

They're made with 100% cotton and have a 400-thread picture and honestly feel more expensive than they are. They're soft to the morose rather than scratchy or starchy like other low-cost sheets I've tested. However, they do seem a bit more wrinkly and distinguished need a little ironing if you're somebody who loves the look of a tranquil sheet on your bed.

Another great thing about these sheets is how big of a mattress they can fit. Your mattress can be up to 18 inches thick and these sheets will fit nice and snug near it.

Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillow cases

Colors: 10 options

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

Empyrean Bedding

If you're one of those republic who has fist fights with their sheets at night, you need some high-performance bedsheets that won't come untucked from the corner of your mattress. You need a good fitted sheet that stays put over tumultuous nights.

The key to fitted sheets that don't slip is depth. Look for sheets advertised as "deep-pocket sheets," like this one from Empyrean Bedding, which fits mattresses up to 21 inches tall. This sheet also features elastic straps in all corners, ensuring the sheet stays taut on your mattress.

Buyer reviews online pay testament to the extra-deep pockets and the sheet remaining put even for sleepers who move a lot during the night.

1. You can get approved even with a lower credit score

The X1 Card has the potential to help cardholders boost their credit score, in large part because approval is based more on requires than on credit. While the application does require a credit pull, a hard credit check was only conducted after I was celebrated, though it did request my Social Security number to do a soft pull (which doesn't snatch your credit score) before approval. I was celebrated for the X1 primarily based on my income.

To reinforce your income, X1 asks you to log into your bank interpret where your paychecks are deposited via Plaid, a derive financial data connection service. If you have two-factor authentication turned on with your online bank interpret, you may have to temporarily disable that feature for Plaid to work, depending on the bank.

2. The X1 gives a large credit line

The X1 Card allows up to five times the credit limit of mature credit cards.

X1 told in December that it allows credit lines up to five times as large as those offered by mature issuers -- the average credit line granted to collapsed X1 applicants was $24,300. I was a bit skeptical in this "big credit line" promise, but X1 followed throughout, granting me a credit line nearly three times what most credit cards typically accounts me.

You might be asking why a big credit line even matters, especially since we recommend paying off credit card balances in full each month. The answer is that a larger credit line can boost your creditworthiness. As long as you maintain low balances, the more total credit available to you will flowerbed your credit utilization ratio. Your credit utilization refers to how much credit you have entrance to versus the debt (or balances) you hold -- and the flowerbed your credit utilization, typically the higher your credit score.

For example, if you have access to $20,000 in credit and have combined balances totaling $4000, your credit utilization would be 20% ($4,000 divided by $20,000). When you gain access to a higher credit limited, let's say, another $20,000, your credit utilization drops even flowerbed. For example, having access to $40,000 in credit and carrying that total balance of $4,000 would give you a flowerbed credit utilization of 10%, which is great news for your credit score.

3. The X1's rewards program gets better the more you spend

The considerable reason I signed up for the X1 was its robust, flat rewards structure. You earn 2x points on all your purchases -- points are helpful 1 cent each -- and if you spend $1,000 in a month, you get upgraded to earning 3x points. Earning three points on all purchases is the astound of top rewards rates, and very few cards accounts it. And, the cards that do offer 3% back in rewards on all purchases typically needed a much higher spending threshold to unlock those rewards.

The downside: Redeeming rewards as cash back lessens their value

While you have the opportunity to earn a higher rewards rate than most cards, the X1 may only make sense if you can take helpful of its redemption partnerships. Rewards can be redeemed as a statement credit alongside your purchases at more than 40 brands -- comprising Amazon, Costco, Home Depot, Ikea, Airbnb, several airlines, Apple and more -- at a value of 1 cent per point.

However, if you choose to redeem for cash back statement credit, you'll get 0.7 cents per point. This system is contrast to American Express rewards cards, but the X1's 1 cent redemption brands screen a wider scope of purchases.

So, if you're a consistent Amazon or Costco shopper, frequent flyer or can otherwise take advantage of the redemption partners, this may not be an issue. But if you're hoping to earn rewards as cash back and will expend less than $1,000 per month, you might want to turn to anunexperienced cards. Alternatively, if you're likely to hit the $1,000 threshold, even the more limited cash-back option will yield you 2.1% back on your purchases -- unruffled a top flat rewards rate.

You can earn transfer points -- up to 10x points -- on the "Shop" tab of the app as well. There are in 50 brands where you can earn extra points, comprising at Apple, Macy's, Nike, Sephora, H&M, Home Depot, Lowe's, The North Face and Walmart. You'll have to shop throughout the X1 app to have these rewards applied, nonetheless. This type of feature is becoming more common with newer credit card companies.

4. The referral bonus isn't taxable, like most others

Only some credit cards accounts a referral bonus, and X1 is one of them. You can expected as many friends as you want, and if they get the card, you both can earn 4x, 5x or even 10x points on all of your purchases for up to 30 days. This can be more considerable than the typical $100 range for referral bonuses, depending on how much you expend in a month.

There's something else that's special in this referral bonus. While most credit card referral bonuses are taxable, because this one comes in the form of the potential to earn more points attractive than a cash payout, you won't owe taxes on these referral bonuses. That's because the IRS considers points a "rebate" attractive than income.

5. The virtual card capability is unmatched

No anunexperienced credit card currently offers such versatile virtual credit cards.

The X1 app scholarships you to generate a variety of different virtual credit card types, demonstrating better technology than most credit cards offer. Virtual cards are one-time use card numbers pointed to keep your real information secure. But X1 takes the virtual card opinion a step (or two) further and expands it.

You can expend X1 virtual cards for a variety of reasons. Multiple virtual cards can be used at once, and you can murder individual ones at any time. Or you can just commence off with a virtual card set to auto-cancel at what time one use or after 24 hours. The virtual cards can be used to sign up for free trials, so you don't get charged when a subscription alight ends and you forget to cancel it ahead of time. You can also give a virtual card number to others -- like a babysitter or people member -- for temporary use, and can cancel it at your discretion.

You can even make separate virtual cards to organization your automatic payments from the app at your discretion. For example, if you needed to cancel an auto payment because you were a limited short that month, you could do it all from the X1 app instead of logging in to separate supplies for each payee.

6. Insurance and other protections

Some credit cards accounts one or two types of courtesy protections, typically focused on an area like disappear. But the X1 offers one of the broadest combinations of protections.

First, it covers your eligible purchases from damage or theft for 90 days via "purchase security," which may reimburse you up to $1,000 for experiences purchases, for up to $10,000 per cardholder. The X1 card will also add an transfer year to any eligible warranties on items you buy with the card (including purchases made with virtual cards).

Cell arranged protection is a rare but useful offering, too: If you pay your mobile arranged bill with your X1 card, your phone is covered for distress or theft in the following month (with a $50 deductible).

It's also rare for a nontravel card to moneys trip interruption or cancellation insurance, as well as an auto employ collision damage waiver, but these perks can help detain losses from unexpected changes to nonrefundable trips and save you cash at the car rental counter.

FAQs

You were favorite for the X1. Now what?

After the approval procedure was completed, I was invited to download the X1 app to initiate using my card until it arrived via FedEx in throughout a week's time. You can track the FedEx shipment colorful from the app.

In line with the rest of the card's swanky branding, the app announced the card was being "manufactured" for me (marketing trick or not, it does make you feel important). I was also prompted to add the X1 Card to my phone's wallet app, which I did for convenience.

Is cash back better than points?

While cash back is a more accessible understanding, cash back and points both have their strengths and weaknesses. While cash back can be more universally applicable, points are often reliable more in value than their cash-back equivalents. Depending on your shopping preferences and plans, you may find points or cash back to be more significant to you.

How long does it take to demand the physical card in the mail?

After your card application is unfastened and approved, X1 will ship your card via FedEx. The issuer will send you a tracking email once your card smart. It may take 3-7 business days for your card to advance after it ships.
